I know many here don’t have the highest opinion of Consumer Reports, but many buyers pay close attention to what they say.

Anyways, interesting justification for the new rankings:

The ratings organization this year changed its methodology, including giving higher weighting to models that come with collision-mitigation systems, such as auto emergency brakes. This helped Audi, in particular.

Hmm. Audi is number one? That’s interesting. I've never heard good things about Audi reliability.

I think old Audi is way different than new Audi... also read the embedded quote.

I’m usually one of the “defenders” of CR around here (if you can call it that) but I fail to see the correlation between active accident avoidance tech and reliability.

It’s not that it can’t be done in a reliable fashion, I just don’t see how that makes a vehicle more reliable. I can see them weighting the score for safest vehicles, just not most reliable .

Ah, so their advanced tech helped them. Wonder how all that tech will work in ten years, though? That's what worries me about a lot of new cars.

I let my subscription lapse last year so I can’t read the full article and see their thought process... yeah I don’t get it either.

I kinda feel like Consumers union changes the weight of their criteria pretty much for funsies and not in relation to things that actually make a car good or reliable.

In fairness, these report card rankings are about quality and reliability in terms of an overall score. CR does a composite score on each vehicles road test scores and predicted reliability and comes up with a total. All that being said, it does seem Audi is doing much better.

I don’t think it’s completely willy nilly, but some of their weightings seem really arbitrary.

What exactly causes Jeep to be a perennial basement-dweller?

Well a combo of poor road tests and shit that breaks. The Wrangler Unlimited was at one time the lowest scoring vehicle tested by CR (that still may be the case). I think it got a 20 out of 100. Combine that with problems that are reported across the FCA range and you get that low score.

Half of Audi’s stuff is tarted up VW’s, so I wonder why they’re so far apart in the rankings.

So Audis are deemed more reliable because they have better crash avoidance? I think it’s much more useful to consumers to know whether their car will break without them crashing it. I think it’s a much harder thing to measure and quantify than safety avoidance systems - adding those in just dilutes the useful information.

Intesting that the Germans, long known for their technical prowess as much as their unreliability, will now be redeeming themselves without even trying.
